The Ross Center for Disability Services
Faculty Handbook
Philosophy and Mission Statement
The University of Massachusetts is committed to compliance with Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973, the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 and other relevant state and federal legislation.
The goal of the Ross Center for Disability Services is to function as a resource to University faculty in offering students equity and excellence in education, maximizing each student's educational potential while helping him or her develop and maintain independence. Our philosophy is one that encourages self-awareness, self-determination, self-advocacy and independence in a comprehensively accessible environment. The office works with faculty, staff and students on campus to ensure that appropriate academic adjustments are made that allow all students an equal footing inside the classroom and around campus.
This faculty guide
is designed to provide you with the resources necessary to assist students with
disabilities in their pursuit of equal education at UMB. You, as a faculty member,
are obligated by law to provide students with disabilities full and equal access
to University programs and activities. You also have certain rights, which are
delineated in this handbook. The Ross Center is available to assist you in finding
the balance of providing the accommodation without compromising the learning
experience.
